Show the stem and its mating parts
Include a dimensioned drawing with a part number, revision and units. Show overall length, stepped diameters, shoulders, threads, keyways, splines and end connections where applicable. Identify mating components and highlight the dimensions that control the assembly fit. A reference sample can help clarify geometry, but the production requirements still need to be agreed. Examples include a stainless steel gate valve stem, a solid forged ball valve stem and a splined upper shaft for a butterfly valve. Each requires its own connection details.
Define threads, material and finish
For a threaded stem, state the thread form, size, pitch, direction and engagement length. For a splined or keyed connection, provide the profile and mating-fit requirements. Specify the material grade and condition, any heat treatment and the surface finish or coating needed on each functional area. Identify which requirements are fixed and which are open for review. Do not use a photograph as evidence of steel grade, tolerance or surface roughness.
Separate sample and production approval
Provide sample and batch quantities, critical tolerances, and the inspection or material reports required with delivery. Agree how the first sample will be checked and who approves the final drawing revision. Our gate valve stem inspection checklist gives a starting point for dimensional and document checks. Additional testing, traceability and marking should be stated before the quotation is finalized so the scope is clear.
Include installation and delivery details
Tell us the intended valve application and working environment so questions about the component can be raised early. Include the delivery destination, required marking and preferred protective packing. For a gearbox inquiry, also provide operating torque, ratio and mounting details; for a chain wheel, include chain specification and operating height.
